A Brief History California Steel Industries is located approximately 50 miles east of Los Angeles in Fontana, California, on what was once part of the former Kaiser Steel facility, originally built in the 1940s. Our plant sits on 450 acres, with approximately 115 acres under roof. In 1984, after the closure of Kaiser Steel's facilities, the need to establish a viable West Coast steel source in the U. S. brought together two of the world's biggest participants in the steel industry: Japan's JFE Steel Corporation and Brazil's Vale. JFE Steel, headquartered in Tokyo, is a major steel producer in Japan. Vale, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, is the world's largest iron ore producer and exporter, and the world's largest mineral-based conglomerate. California Steel Industries, Inc. has more than tripled its output and shipments since the first coils were rolled and shipped in late 1984. In 1999, CSI shipped more than 1.8 million tons of coil, sheet, and pipe products, representing sales of more than $690 million. CSI employs about 1,000 people, representing some of the finest skilled workers in this industry today. In a union-free setting, we cross-train our employees to perform any job on their production lines. Craftsmen possess multi-craft capability and can perform numerous tasks that are usually separated and restricted in a union facility. California Steel Industries, Inc. will be the most competitive and profitable steel company in the Western United States, and we will seek growth opportunities in order to improve upon our market leadership. California Steel Industries is strategically located to serve the Western United States market. Fifty percent of the flat-rolled steel in this region is consumed in the Southern California, Las Vegas, Phoenix areas. Our steel is found in thousands of products that make our lives better and safer every day. How to Find Us CSI is about an eight-mile drive from Ontario International Airport, and strategically located near Interstates 10 and 15. For a map to our location, click here. |
